I would argue that it is because we have more facial muscles, but also because we have culture; a system of signs that enables us to read others emotions through their facial attitudes.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_EkmanWhy do humans have more distinct facial expressions than other animals?
Upright posture and speech means that we generally only see the face area of the other person when we are communicating with them, where as animals are more focussed on the entire body posture. Human attention is very much focussed on the face. When toddlers first start drawing people they draw heads and nothing else.
That's probably the major reason behind eyebrows, they give more defintion to our facial expressions. Why do humans have more distinct facial expressions than other animals?
we are more complex than the animals. we have the opposible thumb, pronation and supination of the forearm and lower leg and a much more flexable spine to allow flexion, extension, and lateral bending.
Facial expressions are directly linked to the ability to speak. Gesticulations (the use of hands) are used for similar effect.
I don't think they do. maybe we're not accustomed to note their expressions...
